I’ve been asking around several forums on what they think about Yahoo!’s search engine and how often they use it.
The results were, well, not that surprising. It looks like no one uses Yahoo! except for checking their emails, browsing groups or chatting on their messenger client. Not one used Yahoo! search as their primary engine. A few searched on it to check for SEO rankings or to search something that they couldn’t find in Google. When I asked if they noticed an improvement in Yahoo!’s search quality, all those who replied said they didn’t see any change. When I asked how its search quality compared to that of Google’s, at best, it was “slightly worse” than Google. No one found it at par or better than Google.
I want to determine how Yahoo! Search stands in the Philippine market, but don’t let my initial findings influence you. Please answer these questions by leaving a comment below:
1. How often do you use Yahoo! Search?
2. How does Yahoo!’s search results compare to Google?
3. Rank the following according to the frequency of your use of Yahoo!’s services: email, search, groups, messenger
Really would appreciate your cooperation. Thank you!
1. How often do you use Yahoo! Search?: May Search pala ang Yahoo?? Oooooooh.. haha!
2. How does Yahoo!’s search results compare to Google?:
Ahmm.. meron palang search ang yahoo, pero walang binatbat kay Big G 😛
3. Rank the following according to the frequency of your use of Yahoo!’s services: email, search, groups, messenger:
Messenger
Groups
Search
Email – Di ko na na open 😛
1. I haven’t used it since ’01, I think.
2. Never bothered to check.
3. Messenger, Groups, Email, Search
1) 1:20 = 20 google searches, only 1 yahoo search.
2) I think that google’s results page looks cleaner than yahoo.. maybe is because of the font used. And i feel that google’s search is more trustworthy than yahoo search. Maybe because I always (well 90% of teh time) end up getting the results that i need.
3.
> Messenger – most contacts use YM (but the current version is sooo annnnnnnoying!)
> Groups – i’m susbscribed to a lot of yahoo groups
> Email – i open yahoo mails because a notification appears on my task bar
> Search – as i said above, i hardly use this one.
Not at all. I don’t think I’ve used it — ever.I wouldn’t know. I guess I rely mostly on Google when it comes to searches. Neater output too.Email, messenger, groups, search…And I rarely even check my mail there.
1. 1 Yahoo search so far this year.
2. It had less than a fourth of what Google had for the same keyword I used.
3. Messenger, Groups, Email (haven’t opened for a couple of months now) and Search
1. Barely use it. I only use it to check “Filipina” rank.
2. The results are totally different. I like the clean and organized look in google.
3.
Messenger- almost daily
email- check it twice a week
Groups- check it twice a week
search- barely done weekly; only check “Filipina” rank
1. How often do you use Yahoo! Search?
Very rarely. Only when something doesn’t show off in google. Or when I’m fond of egoogling (or googling my name, which practically should be called e-yahooing if I’m using Yahoo, but it just sounds crappy. LOL)
2. How does Yahoo!’s search results compare to Google?
There’s no point in comparison actually. =P
3. Rank the following according to the frequency of your use of Yahoo!’s services: email, search, groups, messenger
messenger, groups, email, search
1. There was a time that my Firefox search bar was on Yahoo! … just to make a change.
2. I think the Yahoo search results are at par with Google.
3.1. Messenger – on all the time
3.2. Groups – I moderate a couple of groups
3.3. Search
3.4. Mail – it’s now all spam! So it’s useless.
Hi Andrew. Yahoo still ranks as of the top 5 Philippine websites based on my research March to June. However, I think most users that they attract are young and the newbies. Those who are actively researching, like students, don’t rely on one search engine alone and this is where Yahoo comes into great use as its results are not less like of Google.
For Yahoo applications, Yahoo Messenger ranks #1 followed by Yahoo Mail. Also, Yahoo Mail still ranks #1 email application to date but not as high as it was before.
I think this is cause by the people’s use of social networks, like Friendster, that served as an extension of one’s email platform.
I hope this helps.
1. How often do you use Yahoo! Search?
have i used yahoo! search? uhmmmm…
2. How does Yahoo!’s search results compare to Google?
are we talking about caviar and bagoong? lol
3. Rank the following according to the frequency of your use of Yahoo!’s services: email, search, groups, messenger
messenger, groups, email, search
1. Rarely. I sometimes use the Image search since it returns Flickr images (but usually I go straight to Flickr). But I think many clueless (?) people in Internet cafes use it because I often get search engine referral from Yahoo! and it’s probably because the Yahoo! Toolbar is often installed in cafe PCs.
2. Google is still the best. I haven’t encountered a dual search where Yahoo! delivers better relevance than Google.
3. I don’t use any of those often! Hmmm… maybe groups, search, messenger, email
I still use Yahoo search a lot, for SEO purposes. Need to check if my keywords are still ranking there.
I do this because I still earn lots of traffic from Yahoo…also there are some instances that results are more relevant in Yahoo than on G
Nope.
1. I only use it when I can’t find what I want from Google.
2. I can’t really see the difference. But I found out that my articles are ranked higher on Yahoo even if they are just new ones.
3. email(1), messenger(2) groups(3), search(4)
1. Very seldom. I use it when I’m researching (read: stalking somebody). Of course, that is only after I use Google.
2. Yahoo shows some sites that doesn’t show up in Google. Hence the need to check with Yahoo Search after using Google.
3. I use Y!Messenger daily for business and personal communication. My Y!Groups membership is sent to my Gmail, though I go to the group website once in a blue moon to check for spam. I check my Yahoo inbox when Y!Messenger tells me there’s new mail.
1. How often do you use Yahoo! Search?
Almost never. Actually, I haven’t touched the stuff in years!
2. How does Yahoo!’s search results compare to Google?
Since I don’t use it at all, I wouldn’t know. But I remember when I first used Google, the search results were so much more accurate than Yahoo’s, hence my switch. And I’ve never looked back.
3. Rank the following according to the frequency of your use of Yahoo!’s services: email, search, groups, messenger
Email – NEVER
Search – Not in 2 or 3 years (except for the rare check for SEO stuff)
Groups – Always
YM – Always, but gradually shifting to GTalk now, due to the annoying and increasing spam
