As I was tinkering with my new Google Nexus One phone, I was bummed to learn that I couldn’t easily change the notification tone setting to a custom MP3 file. One trick that worked was by connecting the Nexus to my PC and mounted the SD card. Then, I created three new folders in the root folder: notifications, ringtones and alarms. I saved the MP3 files to their respective folders and voila.. the custom sounds now show up in the list of tones. If you want different tones for each app (Messaging, Gmail, Gtalk e.g.), go into their settings and manually assign a unique sound file so you’ll know where the new message is coming from. I love my new phone! More tips coming soon.
Thanks dude! it is a great tip!

Thank you very much for that awesome tip! Worked beautifully.
Silly question, but is the root folder the Android folder?
